Most families in the Valley pay somewhere in the low-to-high twenties per hour for an occasional babysitter. Where you land in that range depends on how many children are home, their ages, the time of night, and what else the sitter is asked to do. The numbers below give you a reasonable starting point. They are averages, not rules, and they are not this site's own rates. Our service quotes privately after a request is reviewed.

What pushes a rate up or down
- Number of children. Watching three children is a bigger job than watching one. Many families add a set amount per hour for each additional child rather than renegotiating each time.
- Ages and needs. Infants, toddlers who are still napping, and children with medical, feeding or behavioral plans need more attention and usually command more.
- Time of day. Late evenings, very early mornings and overnight stays are harder to fill.
- Holidays and big nights. New Year's Eve, school breaks and busy wedding weekends are high-demand times. Decide the holiday rate when you book, not at the door.
- Extra duties. Pet care, driving, homework help, meal preparation or light housework beyond the children's own mess are reasonable reasons to pay more.
- Experience and training. A sitter with current CPR and First Aid training, years of steady references or special-needs experience is worth more to most families.
- Location and travel. Longer drives across the Valley, or a sitter who arrives without a car and needs a ride home, should be part of the conversation.

Arizona minimum wage and babysitters
Arizona's minimum wage is $15.15 per hour in 2026, according to the Industrial Commission of Arizona. The state's poster for the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act says the Act does not apply to "any person who is employed performing babysitting services in the employer's home on a casual basis." Occasional date-night sitting usually falls into that description. A regular, scheduled nanny arrangement may not, and it can also make you a household employer for tax purposes. If you are hiring someone on a steady schedule, read the IRS Household Employer's Tax Guide (Publication 926) or talk to a tax professional.
Whatever the legal floor, the averages above are well above it, and a fair, agreed rate is part of what keeps a good sitter coming back.
Agree on these before the visit
- The hourly rate, the holiday or late-night rate, and the add-on for each extra child.
- Whether there is a minimum number of hours (many sitters ask for two or three).
- What happens if you come home late, or cancel the same day.
- How you will pay (cash, Zelle or another app) and when.
- Who drives the sitter home after dark, especially for a teenage sitter.
Write it on your babysitter handoff sheet so nobody has to remember the details at 11 p.m. For tips on vetting a new sitter, see How to Find a Babysitter in Phoenix.
